Map of Tatanka

Tatanka, like the hardy American bison, is well suited to flourish across the High Plains.

Tatanka is a new medium-height, medium-maturity variety hard red wheat, developed by K-State Research and Extension. It has shown very competitive yields in western Kansas under both dryland and limited irrigation, with below average straw strength. Tatanka performs well under low management environments.

Tatanka has moderate resistance to both stripe and stem rust and is intermediate to leaf rust. It is moderately tolerant to acid soils and is resistant to soil borne mosaic virus, which may allow it to come east into central Kansas. It is moderately susceptible to wheat streak mosaic virus.

  • Excellent choice for dryland farming systems
  • Good quality wheat that delivers excellent yield
  • Excels in environments of Western Kansas and Eastern Colorado
